Role Title: Senior Data Engineer (Product & Experience)

ROLE PURPOSE

Each month over 10 million people read the content of Mediahuis Ireland publications including Irish Independent, Belfast Telegraph and Sunday World - they are informed and entertained - generating hundreds of millions of pageviews in the process. On the core data team at Mediahuis Ireland our mission is to support the products, platforms and business functions by delivering the best data foundations.

In the collaborative environment that is Mediahuis Ireland the Senior Data Engineer will work cross functionally with product teams, marketing teams and audience teams. This is a unique opportunity to work in the fastest growing subscription business in Ireland.

Outputs of this role will shape the direction of Mediahuis Ireland by improving our understanding of our customer, creating data flows from our source data platforms. This insight will then be used to assist the business in optimisation pricing, subscriptions, bundling and advertising yields. It will highlight new eCommerce opportunities and inform digital product development and publishing strategy.

ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES

• Your focus will be all stages of the data lifecycle from ingestion, engineering to usage. You are responsible for the efficient capturing of data from source data and integration of that data into core data sets building out ELT and ETL pipelines. You will translate business understanding and ideation insights and narratives.

• Turn raw disparate data into defined reusable data products for data savvy end users.

• Be the lead data engineer for capturing new and existing data sources and integrating into Big Query and Azure.

• Play key role in converting various data sources into interrogatable datasets, metrics and insights across all areas of the business.

• Work with various APIs to bring clean, timely data into our core platforms of Big Query and Azure.

• Understand and contextualize the performance of the Mediahuis Ireland online business (web, mobile and app).

• Work with colleagues to develop actionable insights to drive customer subscriptions, engagement, monetisation, and loyalty.

• Collaborate with engineers, product managers and data scientists to understand data needs, representing key data insights visually in a meaningful way.

• Administrative gatekeeper of data coming from main digital platforms.

• Ensure efficient storage of data

• Be the engineering lead on large scale data migration projects

• Champion efficient and compliant use of data and understand good data architecture

Collaboration & Stakeholder management

• Support head of data and analytics in the production of sensible data flow plans

• Leverage data to inform colleagues in publishing, content, advertising sales and marketing strategies and recommend changes as appropriate.

• Assist the team in gathering business requirements from stakeholders - especially non-technical stakeholders

EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS 

• BSC or MSC in relevant area.

• 5+ years’ experience in a data team.

• Strong data engineering and analytical background

SKILLS

• Strong communication skills

• Experience with web and app data tracking

• Proficient in Google Tag Manager and Google Analytics

• Knowledge of Google Cloud Platform, including BigQuery

• Skilled in SQL, Python, and API integration

• Expertise in data storage patterns and schemas

• Proven web analytics experience with web and app data

• Excellent stakeholder management, collaborating across teams to understand data/report usage and team needs

• Team player, effectively working with others across the organization

• Able to present and explain technical concepts to non-technical users

• Familiarity with Google Cloud, BigQuery, Data Studio, and JavaScript is a plus
