Mediahuis Emerging Talent Programme

Opportunity awaits

We’re interested in hearing from aspiring journalists with a passion for story-telling. We’re offering a two-year contract allowing you to learn from, and work alongside, experienced journalists in our newsroom in Dublin. So, if you have a burning desire to be a journalist, this could be your opportunity.

Applications open on at 12:00 noon on Monday, April 14, and close on Sunday, May 11, at 23:45

How long is the MET Programme?

The programme is a 2-year fixed term contract.

When does the programmes start?

The programme will start in September 2025.

Why does the programme start later in the year?

The programme starts later in the year to give people who are currently working the opportunity to work their notice period. It also gives parents time to arrange childcare or extra support if needed.

Do I need to have worked in journalism before?

No previous experience required.

Is this a paid opportunity?

Yes. We are offering a salary of €28,080 for roles in Dublin.

Who is eligible for the programme?

The programme is open to anyone who has a passion for journalism.

Is there an age limit?

No. The MET Programme is open to anyone over the age of 18.

Do you encourage applications from people with a passion for journalism that have been working in a different sector for 20 years and want to now pursue their dream?

Absolutely. We welcome applications from individuals of all backgrounds and experiences.

I was born outside of Ireland but Ireland is now my home. Is it worth me applying?

Yes, we want voices that represent a multi-cultural modern day Ireland.

I’m a parent and would like to get back into the industry after years of bringing up my children. Is this programme suitable for me?

I’m currently in a career that my heart is not in. My passion is storytelling and journalism. Would you consider me?

Yes. This programme is open to anyone who would like to change career and fulfil their passions.

Why do you ask diversity questions as part of the application process?

How many people will be on the programme?

We have two positions available under this year’s programme. Both roles are for Multi-Media Reporters based in our Dublin office.

I did not do very well in my exams at school, will this prevent me from applying?

No, not at all. We are not asking for qualifications in the application. These are not important. It’s your passion for storytelling we are interested in.

Will I be able to take holiday while on the programme and will it be paid?

Yes, you will be entitled to 25 days annual leave plus national public holidays. These are paid.

Are the positions only available in Dublin?

Yes, both positions are based in Dublin.

Is Hybrid working available?

Mediahuis offers a hybrid working policy with a minimum of three days per week in the office. Those on the programme will be able to avail of hybrid working after a period of onboarding and settling in.

Will my contract be extended after two years?

No. During the two year period programme you will be given the development you need to be able to apply for any suitable roles as an internal candidate.

What does the interview process look like? What can I expect?

The first step is the application form which includes mandatory video questions (there is guidance within the form on how to upload this).

The next stage is an assessment day in Dublin. The day will include a number of tasks including group and individual assessments.

When will the assessment day take place?

We have one assessment day, this will take place on Wednesday, May 28 in Dublin. It is important that your available to join us on this date if you are selected for this stage of the process as there is no alternative date.

If I’m successful in being invited to the assessment day is there anything I need to prepare?

Yes. As part of the application process you will need to prepare a presentation. In the application form we ask you to outline a story you are interested in exploring. On the day we would like you to talk through this in more detail. Remember this is a subject of your choice. Something you are passionate about. We are giving you the opportunity to shine.

I don’t live in Dublin. Will there be a separate assessment day held elsewhere?

No, the assessment day will be held in Dublin on Wednesday, May 28. If you are invited to attend we can support with any reasonable travel costs.

This is a two-year programme, with the second year set aside for more specialised development in the areas that you feel you need. You will also have the opportunity to apply internally for any suitable roles throughout the organisation during your time on the programme.
