Job Title: Group Head of Features
Function: Publishing
Department: Editorial
Reporting to: Editor-in-Chief
Role Purpose
The Group Head of Features will be an inspirational leader and will champion features content that engages new and existing audiences on all our digital platforms and in print. A key focus for this role will be shaping the features strategy for the Mediahuis Ireland group, ensuring high-quality features journalism is shared across our platforms in the most effective and efficient way. He/she will drive forward our digital-first strategy and oversee optimal newsroom collaboration and integration. He/she will also drive the evolution of the formats we use for our features journalism. The Group Head of Features will work collaboratively with other editors and group heads to ensure that resources are used in an optimal fashion. He/she will report to the Editor-in-Chief of Mediahuis Ireland.
Role Responsibilities (Overview)
Lead the features department across all platforms and titles.
Encourage a creative, digital-first mindset among features staff.
Work with all editors to devise initiatives to help increase reach, engagement and subscriptions.
Manage a team of magazine/desk/vertical editors – directing resources towards high- quality, agenda-setting features output.
Manage a team of writers, freelance and staff, to get the best quality journalism.
Generate features ideas across all publications.
Work with the Legal Manager to ensure published content is free of legal liability.
Work with the Director of Publishing Operations to ensure budgetary targets are met.
Experience & Qualifications (Minimum Experience & Essential Knowledge)
At least five years’ experience as a senior media professional, with a recognised and demonstrated standard of excellence in the following areas:
A commissioning editor in a leading publication or media organisation.
Team leadership / management.
Demonstrable ability to lead change and be creative with digital formats and storytelling
Skills (Behavioural & Technical)
Behavioural
Strong management skills and ability to lead transformation projects
Ability to make quick, informed decisions under pressure and adapt to late-breaking news
A keen eye for detail and a passion for delivering high-quality journalism
A commitment to journalistic integrity and ethical standards.
Technical
Impeccable writing and editing skills
Proficient in newsroom software and content management systems
Expert knowledge of media law and ethical guidelines for journalism
