Job Title:  Journalist (News)

Department: Belfast Telegraph and Sunday Life

Reporting to: News Editor / Head of Content

Location: Belfast (hybrid working)

Hours: Full Time - includes shift work and occasional weekends 

Please note this is a fixed term contract for a period of approx. 9 months

Role Purpose

As a news journalist for the Belfast Telegraph and Sunday Life you will source and break exclusive stories and provide in-depth analysis online and in print.  You will write high-quality, unique news stories/analysis and innovative online content within the multi-media newsroom. You will have a wide network of contacts that you will continue to develop.

Role Responsibilities (Overview)

• Consistently break stories and write informative analysis

• Create and write up-to-date, accurate, balanced and engaging multimedia content

• Work collaboratively with management and wider editorial teams

• Ensure a high level of fast, accurate, fair and engaging journalism

• Ensure that our output reflects the audiences that we serve – and helps to grow subscriptions online and support print circulation

• Planning and advising desks of relevant upcoming events and potential angles on stories

• Delivering content to tight deadlines

• Also handle general assignment and fast news as directed by the News Editor

• Ability to contribute to podcasts as required and provide video or social media content

• Carry out your duties at all times in accordance with the Mediahuis Editorial Code of Practice and relevant professional and legal codes

Experience & Qualifications (Minimum Experience & Essential Knowledge)

• Experience working as a journalist and breaking stories

• Good contacts

• Good knowledge of current affairs and issues affecting Northern Ireland

• Ability to provide video or audio content if required

• Excellent news judgment coupled with the ability to write engaging content and develop in-depth analysis

• Ability to maximise social media and other digital tools to source news information and promote journalism

• Ability to explain complex issues in an accessible manner
